Grid system

An easy to follow guide

We’ve developed a grid system to maintain a consistent visual identity for the BSS brand.

We use the grids to guide designers with how and where to place the different elements on the page. This creates structure and helps communicate our brand message and information clearly.

The following pages guide you through how to successfully use the grid for all communications.

The guidelines incorporate margins, spaces, and columns collectively – providing an encompassing, consistent framework for the page’s content.

Module grid

A4 Page

We’ve developed a square module grid running across all BSS communications.

It comprises six columns and nine rows at A4 size and adapts and responds to other sized documents accordingly.

The simple system – based around and formed from the Roundel’s geometry – gives the designer a standard, yet flexible framework to design information clearly whilst remaining visually on-brand and professional.

Column grid

A4 Page

The column grid – divided into six columns – creates an ideal template for all communications.

Combined with the module grid, it provides flexibility to combine text and images in different ways according to the requirements of individual pieces of literature.

Baseline grid

A4 Page

Text sits on the baseline grid which is based around a text size of 11.5pt with line height/leading 15.5pt in Gill Sans Regular for an A4 document.

You should always use this text size for body copy when designing A4 communications.

The grid perfectly aligns with the module grid – allowing text to run between the rows and ensuring professional, high-quality typesetting.

Specifications

Elements combined

Here are some examples of bringing the various elements of our identity styling to the grid.

All elements should be aligned, balanced and proportional, creating strong professional communications.

When required, the three supporting organisation logos and web address should align to the grid as per examples shown.

Usage of the BSS Curve shown here is detailed in The BSS Curve.
